The South Bay combines coastal salt with genuine industrial fallout from the refinery corridor along the 405. That fallout bonds to surfaces and does not come off with a wash, so aircraft here often feel rough to the touch even shortly after cleaning. Chemical decontamination is what actually resolves it.

Bare polished aluminum has no clear coat over it, so every pass is on the metal itself.

Salt dulls a polished finish within weeks here, so bare metal at this field needs a maintenance sealant and a schedule rather than an annual polish.

Persistent damp accelerates oxidation on bare metal, so polished aircraft here come back around faster than inland ones.

Polishing runs in stages and a full airframe is usually a multi day job. Joel assesses in raked light before quoting, because old sealant, previous polish work, and pitting all change the answer, and pitting is a maintenance item rather than a polishing one.
