Why polished aluminum has no clear coat
The obvious question is why nobody just clears over it and stops the oxidation. People have tried. A clear film over polished aluminum sits on a surface that flexes in flight and cycles from ramp heat to cold at altitude on every leg, and that is precisely what makes a clear coat craze, yellow, and lift at the edges. Once it lifts, moisture gets underneath and the metal oxidizes in patches you cannot reach. Now the fix is stripping failed clear off polished skin without scratching it, which is a far worse job than keeping bare metal maintained. So bare polished aluminum stays bare, and gets a sealant that slows the oxidation clock rather than sealing it off.
Aircraft brightwork polishing is unforgiving because it is a mirror
On paint, the finish hides small sins. A polished skin is a mirror, and a mirror shows everything. One piece of grit caught in a pad draws a line you can read from thirty feet away. A pad held at an angle leaves haze that only appears when the sun rakes across the panel, which is usually the moment the owner walks up to it. Swirl direction shows. A skipped refinement step shows. There is no filler in a polish, nothing that swells and covers the scratch underneath, so every stage has to fully remove the stage before it or you are only making the last mistake shinier.
What a correct polishing process looks like
It starts with a full wash and dry, because polishing over a skin that still has grit on it is how you scratch it. Then an assessment in raked light to find what is really there: old sealant, wax, oxidation, or earlier polish work. Anything sitting on top comes off first, since it clogs pads and hides the true condition. Painted areas, decals, registration numbers, windows, and static ports get masked. Then the cut, starting with the least aggressive compound that will do the work, tested on one panel before it goes anywhere else. Pad flat, speed low, kept moving, panel never allowed to get hot. Then refinement in steps, seams cleaned out before residue dries, then sealant.
Alclad, and why over polishing cannot be undone
Most aircraft sheet is Alclad, a thin layer of nearly pure aluminum rolled onto both faces of a stronger alloy core. That cladding is what corrodes slowly and what polishes to a mirror. It is also thin, a small fraction of the sheet on each side, and every polish takes a little of it away. Cut too hard, or polish too often with too aggressive a compound, and you go through the cladding into the alloy underneath. The alloy does not polish the same and it corrodes much faster, and there is no putting it back. That is the whole reason to use the lightest step that works and to leave real time between full polishes.
What polishing will not fix
Polishing removes a thin layer of metal. That is all it does. It takes out oxidation, light scratches, and staining that live inside that layer. It does not fix pitting, because a pit has depth, and chasing it with a compound only dishes the metal around it. It does not fix intergranular corrosion, filiform creeping under a paint edge, hail dings, or a scratch that already went through the cladding. Those are maintenance items and they belong with a shop, not with a polisher. An honest look in raked light before quoting is how you find out which one you are dealing with.
Keeping the finish between full polishes
A full polish is a big job, and the point of doing it properly is not repeating it often. Between them the work is small and regular. Handprints wiped off door edges and the boarding step area, exhaust soot taken off the belly before it sits, fuel and oil spots off the wing before they stain, and the maintenance sealant refreshed so oxidation runs slower. Where the aircraft lives matters more than any product. Coastal salt air and an open tiedown pull a finish back much faster than a closed hangar inland. What is brightwork on an aircraft?
Brightwork is the bare polished metal on an airframe, almost always aluminum. It can be the whole fuselage on a polished airplane, or just trim, spinners, cowl rings, and leading edges on a painted one. It is bare metal with no paint and no clear coat over it, kept bright by polishing and sealing.
Why does polished aluminum have no clear coat?
Because a clear film over polished metal on an airframe that flexes and thermally cycles every flight eventually crazes, yellows, and lifts at the edges. Once it lifts, moisture gets under it and the metal oxidizes where nobody can reach. Stripping failed clear off polished skin without scratching it is worse than maintaining bare metal.
Can you polish an aircraft too much?
Yes, and it cannot be undone. Aircraft sheet is usually Alclad, a thin pure aluminum layer over an alloy core, and polishing removes a little of that layer every time. Go through it with an aggressive compound and you are into alloy that corrodes faster and will not polish the same again.
Can polishing remove corrosion?
It removes surface oxidation, which is the dull gray film sitting on top. It does not remove corrosion with depth. Pitting, intergranular corrosion, and filiform creeping under a paint edge are maintenance items, not polishing work. Chasing a pit with a compound dishes the metal around it and leaves the area looking worse.
How long does polishing an aircraft take?
Longer than any other detailing work. A full multi stage polish on a bare aluminum airframe is normally a multi day job. Time depends on current condition, how long since the last polish, and whether old sealant has to come off first. Joel looks at it before quoting, and the estimate is free.
Do you polish painted aircraft as well?
Yes, but it is different work. Paint gets a machine polish to take oxidation and light scratches out of the top of the film, with the film thickness respected, because there is a limited amount of it. Bare metal polishing is metal removal. Same machines, different judgment, and the two get quoted separately.
